Matron - Band 8a - Wirral

Reporting to the Associate Director of Nursing (ADN) / Midwifery/HCPC, the post holder is responsible for and will have a specific focus on visible, accessible and strong clinical leadership, patient experience and the delivery of safe, timely, high quality care. The post holder will lead service and quality improvement programmes alongside supporting the operational management of the Division. This includes ensuring efficient and effective use of resources and the development and maintenance of the highest standards of patient care and service delivery.

In addition to this the post holder will be required to ensure that effective assurance is provided to the ADN/Midwifery/HCPC and Divisional Director of Nursing/ and Midwifery. The post holder will have devolved and full decision making and judgement on any aspect of their responsibilities and will have the authority to act.

Nurse Responsibilities:

  • Set and monitor clinical and non-clinical standards as and when required, take action to ensure high quality patient focus service in line with operational plan.
  • Work in partnership with Senior Sisters/Charge Nurses/Clinical Leaders to ensure the delivery of quality care, holding individuals and teams to account for performance against key indicators.
  • To present as a dynamic, innovative and enthusiastic role model providing leadership, guidance and advice on both operational , clinical and professional issues.
  • Ensure ward/clinical areas comply with national standards of cleanliness for NHS.
  • Empower and motivate team members to maximise their skills, knowledge and potential, with particular reference to the Chief Nursing Officers 10 commitments and the Trusts Nursing, Midwifery and AHP workforce strategy.
  • Lead service development ensuring the best use of all resources using effective benchmarking systems.
  • Work in partnership with ADN/Midwifery/HCPC, Divisional Managers and Clinical Directors to ensure national and local priorities and standards are met.
  • To facilitate and lead in a positive, flexible and strategic manner.
  • Conduct nursing/midwifery/other health care professional staffing reviews at least twice per annum and ensure reporting in place to support the national requirements for reporting on nurse staffing.
  • Lead serious incident investigations and harms validation process in all wards / clinical areas to monitor and review patient harms and utilise improvement methodology to ensure a reduction in harms within inpatient and outpatient areas.
  • To facilitate and contribute to the ward accreditation process, overseeing the development and monitoring of action plans, reporting to the ADN/Midwifery/HCPC to ensure quality safety and patient experience is optimised across all areas.
  • Provide senior nurse cover and advice across the division, and participate in the Trust Major Incident Policy.
  • Participate and contribute to the Professional forum and Matrons meetings, ensuring that information is communicated directly to ward managers and their teams
  • Work closely with the Patient Relations Team to provide support for patients and families in resolving issues and develop increased patient and public involvement in service delivery.
  • Work in alliance with the Infection, Prevention and Control Team, leading the wards / departments in ensuring prevention of hospital acquired infection a key objective, with the outcome of a reduction of hospital acquired infections including MRSA, C. Diff.
