Registered Mental Health Nurse  - Wales CMHT base requirement

The client group is adults  with functional mental illness, from 18 years old up, no upper age limit. 

There could be coexisting  drug and alcohol issues and the patients could also be open to a substance misuse team.

The needs of the patients can vary,  depression, schizophrenia, bi polar affective disorder


As a mental health nurse, you’ll need to show empathy along with excellent observational skills

As a mental health nurse, you’ll provide support to people living with various mental health conditions. This can involve helping the patient to recover from their illness or to come to terms with it in order to lead a positive life.

You can specialize in working with certain groups, such as children or older people, or in a specific area such as eating disorders. Work is often carried out in multidisciplinary teams, liaising with psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, GPs, social workers, and other health professionals.


As a mental health nurse, you’ll need to:

  • contribute to the comprehensive assessment of young people in the area/team that you are working
  • work as a member of the nursing team in providing high quality, evidence-based, holistic nursing care to patients in line with your NMC professional code of conduct and trust policies. You will assess, plan, implement and evaluate packages of care based upon individual patient needs, under the guidance of the Nursing Team Leader as per NICE guidance
  • The Staff Nurse post will complement and support the Ward Manager and Charge Nurses with direct responsibility for leading the team of staff on a day to day basis providing advice and support to lower banded staff within your professional group and team locality. This may include the management of these staff in line with agreed Trust HR processes as required
  • You will be expected to work collaboratively with key partner organizations, service users, carers, clinicians and other practitioners within the multi-disciplinary team in delivering services; providing a 7-day a week, 24-hours a day service for 365 days a year working shifts where appropriate and operationally required
  • In delivering your duties you are expected to display behaviors that are aligned with the Trust values and in accordance with the NHS Constitution at all times
